Davis Legacy's AC Milan took home the silver cup at the prestigious Stanford Turf Winter invitational this past weekend in Palo Alto. Milan?s eventually fell to their rivals San Juan Lightning in penalty kicks after coming back to tie the game 1-1 in regulation. Milan started the tournament with a decisive 4-0 shut out over PAC Chivas. Keepers Christopher Johnson and Jorge Rocha-Figueroa were stellar in goal, both making several clutch saves. Milan?s offense responded as Matteo Sorrentino lofted a cross to Kyle Cuvelier who headed it in for the early 1-0 lead. Johnson opened the second half rumbling through the midfield and tapping it past the onrushing keeper. Johnson added another by heading in a Sorrentino corner kick. Milan then faced the San Ramon Gunners in a tightly fought match. Milan struck first as Buddhika Ratnasiri slid a pass to Sorrentino who sent a spectacular chip shot in for the early 1-0 lead. The Gunners stormed back with two goals to go a head 2-1. In the final ten minutes the Milan offense continued to pressure. Tomas Echiburu deftly passed back to defender Dan Shuman who sent a blast in to tie the game. In the final minute Milan was awarded a free kick, dead ball specialist Sorrentino converted for the game winner. In their final bracket game Milan fell to Alum Rock 4-2. Keeper Braulio Romero-Bakker made several key saves in the loss. Milan?s two goals would be crucial in sending them to the championship match. Jorge Rocha-Figueroa sent a crisp pass to Sorrentino who converted. In the final minute Cameron Peuse iced a penalty kick that was awarded after Sorrentino was tripped in the box. The Davis Legacy Legends, a U-14 girls team, went undefeated in bracket play last weekend to advance to the Sweet 16 of the Association Cup. Led by dynamic goalkeepers Asia Calvo and Lyndsay Carpenter and a stout back line featuring Eva Dicker, Kelsey Bean, Lydia Gegan and Caitlin Field, the Legends did not allow a goal in three tightly contested games at the Lemoore Soccer Complex. After a scoreless first half Saturday morning against the Roosevelt Revolution, the Legends rolled to a 2-0 victory. Both goals were scored by forward Meghan Balderama and set up by nicely struck through-balls from midfielder Kayla Robinson. Later Saturday the Legends dominated possession in a 0-0 draw with the Santa Rosa Revolution. Forward Sarah Strutzel set the tone with physical, aggressive play, and Jade Bugsch, Tara Mullen and Grace Calhoun provided constant pressure up top. In the second half midfielder Claire Buhlman, a menacing presence throughout the game, put a hard shot off the post, while forward Natalie Silver?s point-blank blast was stopped by the Revolution keeper on a diving save. Needing at least a tie in Sunday morning?s finale to extend their season, the Legends completely clamped down on the Newark Knockouts and had the bulk of the scoring opportunities in a 0-0 draw. Outside midfielder Renee Montez was a force all over the field, while Cecilia Gutierrez provided active and creative leadership at center mid throughout the weekend. The Legends will face their longtime rivals, the 49er United Kickin? Chickens, in an elimination game Saturday in Morgan Hill.

Davis Legacy United, a U14B team, made it to the ?sweet sixteen round? of the Association Cup this weekend and will play next weekend in Morgan Hill. United won the first game 2-0 against SRYSL Annadel Harps, when Luis Zepeda made the first goal on a direct kick. Avery Lascher-Posner delivered a cross to Alex Perez who punched it in for the second goal. Matt Linvill had some spectacular saves to maintain the shut-out and secure the win. In the second game, Ajay Klein started the scoring when he redirected a corner kick past the ACCYSL SPUSC United keeper. The game was then tied until a shot set up by Dillayn Hammell III to Zepeda for the second goal. ACCYSL SPUSC United came back and tied the game 2-2, with less than one minute to play. The third and final game on Sunday ended with a 1-0 win, with Oscar Alvarado scoring on an assist from Lascher-Posner. Relentless defense was provided throughout the tournament by Timmy Wu, Klein, Murtaza Khan and Riley Donahue. Strong mid-field play was provided by Perez, Zepeda, and Spencer Salk, and was supported by forwards Bryant Murray and Matthew Meyers.
